Born out of wedlock, Dreyer was adopted from an orphanage at age two. Shortly after, his birth mother died. Many film scholars have interpreted Dreyer’s adaptations of tragic stories about women as an autobiographical feature of his films. Dreyer directed 14 features and 8 shorts, while also working on a number of never-realised projects, including the Jesus film that he was still working on at the end of his life.
