Zack Mayo (Gere) volgt een zware marine-opleiding, omdat hij in een straaljager wil vliegen, maar meer nog omdat hij zijn leven op orde moet krijgen. Het wordt een zware klus, instructeur Foley (Gossett jr) is niet de gemakkelijkste, en met zijn nieuwe vriendinnetje Paula (Winger) heeft hij ook heel wat te stellen. Aardig drama, niet van clichés gespeend, maar toch de moeite waard door het goede spel van Gossett jr, die er een Oscar voor kreeg. Regisseur Hackford maakte twee jaar later Against All Odds.

In Seattle, Washington, Zack Mayo finds his father, Byron Mayo, in bed with a prostitute. Remembering his youth, Zack recalls meeting Byron in the Philippine Islands, where his father was stationed with the United States Navy. Zack’s mother had recently committed suicide and the boy blamed his father for deserting them.
